It was a record-setting month for the Windsor/Essex County Humane Society.

A total of 645 cats and dogs were spayed and neutered during April’s community cat month at the humane society.

Of those, 406 were free-roaming cats that are not socialized to people and are most comfortable living outdoors.

Surgeries for these free-roaming cats, also called community cats, were offered free of charge in April.

The humane society said this will ensure these cats live healthier lives while not contributing to the free-roaming cat population.

Also during April, the humane society performed 239 surgeries on owned pets.

Since opening in 2011, the Humane Society’s spay and neuter clinic has performed almost 15,000 surgeries on dogs, cats and rabbits.
