Sandpoint Beach in Windsor and West Belle River Beach are closed because of high bacterial counts earlier this week.
The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit posted water sampling results Friday that showed E. coli counts over 1,000 at the two beaches which is the threshold for them to be closed.
Swimming is not recommended at Point Pelee’s Northwest Beach, three beaches in Kingsville (Mettawas, Cedar Island and Cedar Beach) and Colchester Beach in Essex because of the sample results that put those beaches on Lake Erie in the warning range.
The only beaches considered a low health risk for swimming based on samples taken Wednesday are Leamington’s Seacliff and Hillman Marsh beaches and Holiday Beach in Amherstburg.
The health unit says contamination of beach water is usually higher during or after rain storms and recommends people avoid swimming if the water is cloudy and you can’t see your feet.
The beaches are tested Wednesdays and the results are posted Fridays at www.wechu.org.
