A fleet of tall ships will be in the Windsor and Essex County area over the Labour Day weekend.
It’s expected that as many as nine ships will be docked in Windsor, Kingsville, Pelee Island and Amherstburg from Aug. 30 to Sept. 2.
“There will be signature events in each community during the weekend and on Sept. 2., there will be a reenactment of the Battle of Lake Erie off Pelee Island,” said Lynette Bain, vice-president of Tourism Windsor Essex Pelee Island.
“There are 15 stops on the tour and ours is the only one planned around an actual battle reenactment which makes ours unique,” said Bain.
Dubbed the Tall Ships 1812 Tour as well as Coastal Trails: Sails to See Festival, the event will be marketed throughout Ontario and the U.S. midwest through $100,000 in funding from the provincial government, announced Friday by Windsor West MPP Teresa Piruzza.
“I’m looking forward to having these tall ships visit our region,” said Piruzza. “Investing in our festivals helps bring more visitors and their spending dollars to our community.”
There are weekend boarding passes available for $15, with children free, which will allow access to each of the tall ships.
Bain said that tall ship enthusiasts are urged to work their way along the river through each community and take advantage of other tourism locations such at Pt. Pelee National Park and Fort Malden.
