Ministry response on LaSalle flooding concerns not enough

LaSalle Mayor Ken Antaya is not impressed with the Ministry of Transportation’s response to town concerns over a possible connection between flooding and the new Herb Gray Parkway project.

The town wrote directly to Steven Del Duca, the minister of transportation, about problems encountered at the eastern end of the parkway project in the Oliver Estates and Heritage Estates neighbourhoods.

The letter was sent in June but the town got no response until mid-November.

Garfield Dales, the director of the Windsor border Initiatives Implementation Group, wrote that Parkway Infrastructure Constructors (PIC) “did a full review of the drainage design and it was their engineer’s opinion that runoff from the parkway lands had not contributed to the flooding.”

Dales went on to say “there were a few minor improvements that were identified that could assist in alleviating localized drainage concerns. These improvements included additional ditches and swales along the perimeter of the parkway lands to better direct water away from adjacent lands and towards the appropriate parkway storm water management systems.”

“That’s not good enough,” Antaya said. “Give me stamped engineered drawings and a name attached to it saying it’s solved the problem.”

Antaya said the town approached the issue with “logic” but got back only “suppositions.”

Dale’s letter noted the ministry will facilitate an on-site meeting between PIC and town staff to review the additional work in the coming weeks.

Antaya said the town will express its displeasure with this initial response in another letter to Del Duca.
