Diana Pepper, a 67-year-old woman from Leamington, has been identified by OPP as the person killed Wednesday afternoon in a five-vehicle crash on Highway 3.
Pepper was in a rear passenger seat of a Pontiac that was rear-ended by a westbound GMC pickup truck hauling a utility trailer, police reported Thursday in an update of their investigation.
Police say when the pickup rear-ended the Pontiac, which was also going west, the Pontiac rear-ended a Chevrolet van and then veered off into the eastbound lane, colliding with a transport truck as well as another Pontiac.
Pepper succumbed to her injuries at the accident scene, police said.
Three males in the van were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, the OPP said.
Two females who were in the first Pontiac with Pepper were treated at an area hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
A male in the pickup truck was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
A female in the second Pontiac was treated for minor injuries at the scene. The man driving the tractor-trailer was not injured.
The accident, which happened about 2:30 p.m. just east of Essex County Rd. 23 in Essex, caused the closure of Highway 3 for several hours.
Police say they’re continuing with their investigation.
