The pride flag will fly over LaSalle following a unanimous decision Tuesday by town councillors to include the rainbow flag, a symbol of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender pride, at town hall.
Councillor Mike Akpata made a passionate speech referencing the mass shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Fla., last weekend where 49 people were shot dead by lone gunman Omar Mateen. Fifty-three others were wounded before Mateen was killed.
Akpata asked council to support his motion to see a Pride flag fly at town hall “in recognition of the loss of life in Orlando.”
“We … have an opportunity to quite clearly state that the Town of LaSalle is an inclusive, caring and diverse community,” Akpata said. “There’s no place for hatred and bigotry in LaSalle.”
