2) The Windsor Port Authority will hold its annual general meeting at The Windsor Club at 4:30 p.m. Port Authority Chairman Charles S. Pingle will review the performance of the port during the 2013 shipping season and provie an update on current projects.

3) Windsor Star reporter Brian Cross will be at Rideau Hall in Ottawa tonight along with Editor-in-Chief Marty Beneteau and retired Editorial Page Editor John Coleman for the Michener Awards, which honours “meritorious public service journalism.”

Cross and The Star were nominated for stories and editorials about the community’s campaign, ultimately successful, to keep thoracic cancer surgery in Windsor.

Here is what the judges said about The Star’s entry: “The Windsor Star gave voice to a community that was fighting to keep a vital health care service. As part of a consolidation plan, Cancer Care Ontario directed Windsor hospitals to stop providing cancer-related thoracic surgery and to send their patients to a London facility two hours away. When the Windsor medical community resisted, Cancer Care Ontario threatened to withdraw funding for all cancer surgeries in the city. The Windsor Star’s persistent coverage highlighted inconsistencies and potential risks in the Cancer Care Ontario plan, and it galvanized a community-wide protest that caused the agency, and the provincial government, to reverse its decision.”

4) In sports, the Los Angeles Kings look to sweep the New York Rangers in Game 4 of The Stanley Cup. And the Detroit Tigers square off against the Chicago White Sox. Yesterday’s game was postponed by rain.
