Essex County OPP handed out Tim Hortons gift cards at a Tecumseh RIDE checkpoint Thursday as part of a Positive Ticketing Program.
“It’s nice to be able to get a smile from a driver at a RIDE initiative,” said Const. Karen Sinnaeve. “The OPP is committed to keeping our communities safe and drinking and driving prevention is an integral part of that commitment.”
The OPP set up a RIDE checkpoint in Tecumseh on Lesperance Road. Officers handed out the gift cards to drivers who had not been drinking and obeying other rules of the road including wearing seatbelts.
The Positive Ticketing Program, aimed at building relationships with citizens and businesses, has already been implemented in other cities across Canada.
The OPP bought the gift cards with donations from officers. The annual fundraising effort also helps to buy Christmas gifts for families in need. The cOPPS For Charity committee has also purchased 30 sleeping bags for Street Help in Windsor.
