A routine stop of a speeding vehicle on Highway 401 in Lakeshore led to the seizure of a fully automatic firearm and drugs, say provincial police.
The incident happened last weekend, on June 18, around 2:15 p.m.
Essex County OPP said their traffic management unit was monitoring the eastbound lanes of the 401 when an officer stopped a grey Jeep SUV that had been exceeding the speed limit.
The vehicle had two occupants. The driver was a 19-year-old Windsor woman. However, police said she falsely identified herself to the officer.
Also in the vehicle was an Etobicoke man.
Police arrested the driver and obtained grounds to search the vehicle.
The search uncovered a prohibited firearm that OPP described as fully automatic, as well as two prohibited magazines.
Also found were quantities of cocaine, methadone, and cash, along with drug paraphernalia.
The male passenger of the vehicle was subsequently arrested.
A highway enforcement team, a police dog, forensic officers, and the Essex County OPP crime unit were all involved in the arrests and seizures.
