A heat warning has been issued for Windsor and Essex County.

Environment Canada said high temperatures Friday are expected to reach above 30C and drop to the low 20s at night. The humidex is expected to hit 4oC by Friday afternoon.

Showers on Saturday and Sunday may offer some relief from the heat over the weekend. Cooler conditions are expected to arrive Monday with temperatures around 25C.

Dr. Wajid Ahmed, Windsor- Essex County Health Unit’s Acting Medical Officer of Health reminds the public that everyone is at risk from heat, especially older adults, infants and young children, people who work or exercise in the heat and those with certain medical conditions. Warning signs of heat-related illness include dizziness, headache, nausea or vomiting, weakness and confusion. If you experience any of these symptoms seek immediate medical attention. Check on friends, family and neighbours frequently during heat events, and even after the weather cools off, as they may still feel the effects of the heat.

There are way to prevent a heat illness by drinking plenty of water, wearing a wide-brimmed hat and lightweight, loose-fitting clothing, take a cool bath or shower and limit outdoor activities to the coolest part of the day.

Also do not leave children, adults or pets in a parked car, arrange for regular visits to family members, neighbours or friends during very hot days. If you have an air conditioner make sure it works properly before the hot weather starts. Otherwise find an air-conditioned spot close by where you can cool off for a few hours during very hot days. You can call 211 for available options. Also, learn to keep your home cool during the summer by keeping window shades or drapes drawn and blinds closed on the sunny side of your home.
