Here’s hoping your air conditioner is working: Environment Canada has issued the region’s first special weather statement of the year for heat.
With meteorologists describing the situation as “the first heat event of the season,” thermometers in Windsor-Essex were expected to reach 33 C on Monday, with the humidity index climbing to 39.
Humidex figures of 40 and above are considered conditions of “great discomfort.”
According to Environment Canada, the sweaty, muggy weather is the result of a warm air mass moving across southwestern Ontario.
“These conditions pose a health risk when you are not used to the heat,” Environment Canada advised.
Infants, the elderly, and those with chronic illnesses are particularly at risk in times of extreme heat.
All residents are encouraged to drink plenty of water and to take breaks from exertion when needed.
Temperatures are expected to lower as the week progresses, with daytime highs staying below 30 C.
More to come.
