Watch out for potentially severe thunderstorms in Windsor-Essex today, says Environment Canada.
According to a release from the agency shortly before 11 a.m. Tuesday, conditions are favourable in our region for the development of dangerous thunderstorms that may be capable of torrential rain and strong gusts of wind.
The risk is expected to be greatest in the afternoon into the early evening.
The severe thunderstorm watch comes about seven hours after a special weather statement for our region announced a moist air mass across southwestern Ontario could bring “significant rainfall amounts in relatively short periods of time.”
Many areas in the province are expected to receive 20 to 40 millimetres of precipitation by the evening — more if thunderstorms develop.
According to meteorologists, the rain should be periodic in nature, with “significant breaks from time to time.”
In Windsor-Essex, southwesterly winds of 20 to 40 km/h are expected.
