The Essex Region Conservation Authority has issued a flood watch for the southern part of Essex County.

High west/southwest winds of 25 to 40 kilometres per hour, with gusts of 60 to 70 km/h, are expected in the region today.

ERCA warned of possible flooding in shoreline areas near Leamington, from Sturgeon Creek to Point Pelee National Park, as well as the west and south coasts of Pelee island.

“The potential for flooding exists resulting from wave overtopping, spray and standing water,” the ERCA flood warning reads. “This ongoing wave activity has the possibility to damage breakwalls that are damaged or unmaintained. There is the possibility for significant erosion of nearshore areas and the toe protection for existing breakwalls.”
