Essex Coun. Bill Baker announced Thursday he is running for mayor which gives the municipality the hottest Essex County mayoral race with four candidates so far.
“That gives the residents and voters a good choice and that’s what they need to look at. They will get to choose the style of leadership and the focus that needs to move Essex forward,” Baker said after his official announcement Thursday morning at the Canadian Transportation Museum and Heritage Village.
Baker joins Mayor Ron McDermott, who is seeking his fourth term, fellow Coun. Ron Rogers and former Essex Free Press editor and Harrow News reporter Andy Comber in the race for mayor.
Baker, 58, is the communications and public affairs director for Leamington District Memorial Hospital. He has spent one term on council.
Baker said Essex is positioned to grow and needs a modern style of leadership he can provide. He talked of Essex as a community of communities with Essex, Harrow, Colchester and McGregor and the need to increase the industrial and commercial revenue.
The nomination deadline for candidates in the upcoming municipal election is Sept. 12 and the election day is Oct. 27.
