The provincial government will commit $4 million a year for the next four years to promote environmental responsibility and soil health to Southwestern Ontario farmers.
Announced on Wednesday, the Great Lakes Agricultural Stewardship Initiative is meant to benefit the Lake Erie basin and the southeastern shores of Lake Huron.
The funding will go towards finding ways to improve soil health and reduce run-off.
The government will share costs to encourage and adopt practices such as soil erosion control and residue management.
Costs will also be shared to modify equipment to address risks concerning manure application and bee health.
The funding used for educational efforts as well: Demonstration farms, technical training, and workshops.
The initiative will be handled by the Ontario Soil and Crop Improvement Association.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Ontario farmers have participated in more than 23,500 environmental improvement projects on their property over the past decade.
