Volunteers hammered, sawed and shovelled at Gesstwood Camp in Essex on Monday to help spruce up the non-for-profit camp for kids.

“I can’t believe the amount of people who have showed up,” said Karen Seguin, executive director at the camp.

About 50 volunteers from FCP Canada and Carpenters Union 494 helped complete the day project. They built a pavilion, bridge, picnic tables and cabin porches.

“We’re committed to the community,” said Matt Brannagan, a senior manager at FCA Canada. Brannagan said he sees it as a great opportunity because children stay at the camp and thrive in outdoor spaces.

There are camps and retreats at Gesstwood throughout the year. The improvements will help as campers start arriving in May.
