City snow crews were busy preparing Wednesday night for the arrival of a potentially messy winter weather system on Thursday morning.

The system is expected to bring snow, sleet and freezing rain early Thursday just prior to the morning commute.

Crews were to pre-salt and apply brine on the E.C. Row Expressway and other major routes overnight.

Equipment will also be on standby to respond should conditions warrant.

Motorists are advised to slow down and drive according to the conditions, leaving extra space for stopping.

More information is available by calling 311 or visiting citywindsor.ca.

Environment Canada is estimating snow and ice pellet accumulation of about five centimetres. The forecast high is 0 C.

The precipitation should end Thursday evening.

Duff: Willson still the same guy

He’s been racking his brain, but Mike Willson finds himself at a loss for words when searching for the proper adjective to describe his son Luke’s second straight trip to the Super Bowl.

“Maybe you can help me out,” he pleads. “I’ve been looking for a year-and-a-half for a word that’s stronger than surreal.

“I haven’t found it, but keep that in mind.”

Click to watch Luke Willson spoof The Bachelor.

“I’ll give you an even weirder one,” Mike Willson says. “My wife (Wilma) works at the Detroit Medical Center.”

Years ago, she job shared with Carol Legwand, mother of Ottawa Senators centre David Legwand.

“Two ladies are going to job share,” Mike Willson explains. “One’s American and one’s Canadian and their kids are going to become pro athletes – one in the NFL and one in the NHL. That’s a longshot to start with and then to think the American’s going to be in the NHL and the Canadian in the NFL, it’s a weirder twist.”

Surreal, some might say.

Much like the ride Luke has taken his friends and family along the past two NFL seasons.

The six-foot-five, 252-pound Seattle Seahawks tight end from LaSalle will play in his second consecutive Super Bowl Sunday as the Seahawks look to defend the crown they won last year in Super Bowl XLIV at the University of Phoenix Stadium.

The second time around, the journey has been somewhat more focused for both Willson and his loved ones.

“For us honestly, last year everything happened so fast that it really didn’t sink in,” Mike Willson said.

“Everything was new, everything was fast. It was, ‘What’s next week? Who do they play?’ This year we were able to, I don’t know if I’d say enjoy it, but certainly understand it more.”

At the end of the day, Luke Willson said, “it’s just a football game,” despite all the hype.

“You kind of learned that last year, that it’s just like any other game we played this year and the same thing’s going to apply when you go out and execute and play well,” he said in a telephone interview from his Phoenix hotel room earlier this week. “And if we do that, we’ll be successful.”

Appreciation is another adjective that’s become prominent within the Willson vocabulary.

“You think about all the players who’ve never made it to the Super Bowl and to get there twice in a row, especially a kid from LaSalle, it’s pretty crazy,” Mike Willson said.

Amidst all the hype, all the accomplishment and all the attention that’s been focused on Luke, perhaps what’s most impressive is how it hasn’t changed him one bit as a person.

He still spends the vast majority of his free time in the late winter and early spring in town. During Tuesday’s Super Bowl media day, Willson, 25, proudly told reporters that his off-season home was mom’s basement.

Seeking adjectives to describe their son, Mike and Wilma Willson are not at a loss for words.

Humble. Affable. Down to earth. Approachable.

All are applicable.

“I think a lot of it comes from my upbringing with my mom and dad,” Luke Willson said. “I’ve got two older brothers (Greg, Eric) and a younger sister (Rachel).

“Growing up, my parents were unbelievable. They would support me in everything I did but at no point did I ever feel forced to play football or play any sport. I just kind of went with the flow and I would have good games and bad games as a kid growing up. But it wasn’t like it was life or death. And I think that kind of shaped me.

“It just kind of allowed me to be laid back and kind of enjoy the game and have some fun playing whatever I was doing.”

Returning home after winning his first Super Bowl last year over the Denver Broncos, Willson was the most sought-after man in Essex County.

Everyone wanted to congratulate him for his rare achievement and while it certainly appeared overwhelming, he did his best to accommodate all requests.

“One thing that’s tough when I go back home is I’m recognized a lot when I’m trying to eat dinner or going out with some friends,” Luke explained.

“I take photos or shake hands so it gets a little distracting, but for the most part as long as someone’s not too inappropriate, not too fanatical, just kind of laid back, easy, it’s fine.”

Those who know Willson best see the Luke that they’ve always known.

“He’s still the same guy that me and our group of friends got to know when we grew up with him,” said Nick Corrado, Willson’s close friend since grade school at LaSalle’s St Paul elementary. “He hasn’t changed at all.

“He comes home and we just hang out, do something with our families. We’re all pretty tight. We just hang out and do normal things.”

Corrado was a teammate on Willson’s first gridiron championship team, when their LaSalle Lightning peewees captured a Windsor Minor crown. They also played high school ball together at Villanova.

“You could see he was a great athlete and it paid off for him with a scholarship to Rice and then you saw what he flourished into,” said Corrado, who played tackle for the Windsor Lancers. “It’s a testament to his athleticism and to his work ethic to get to the point that he is right now.”

Even while he soars to magical heights against the world’s best football players, Willson manages to stay grounded.

“He doesn’t think he’s better than anybody,” Mike Willson said. “I remember him one time saying in an interview, ‘I’m not different than anyone else. I’m just a little bit bigger and a little bit faster.’

“That’s kind of how he looks at it.”

Bigger and faster have taken him to football’s pinnacle but it’s never made him too big for his britches.

“It’s pretty cool that I play in the NFL, but at the same time I’m just a kid from LaSalle,” Luke said.

“I’ll always be that.”

Seniors new to Windsor area get acquainted

Before moving here in 2010, Paul Normandeau’s sum total of exposure to Windsor was a one-night stopover years ago on his way to Florida.

Now, Normandeau and his wife Laurie call the city home after retiring and moving here from Vernon, B.C.

“It’s affordable housing,” Laurie said. “We like to eat as well as have a roof over our head.”

The Normandeaus attended a Friday meet-and-greet luncheon held at the Caboto Club and organized by the Windsor-Essex Active Retirement Community Initiative through their 100 Mile Club.

The event was a mixer for newer residents of the area who are 65 and over.

Although they had no family or friends here and limited knowledge of Essex County, the Normandeaus couldn’t be happier with their move.

“I was actually shocked at how nice Windsor was,” said the 65-year-old Paul. “It’s like this secret nobody knows about.”

Paul said they bought a brand new home in the east end for the price of an unserviced lot in Vernon.

He first learned about this region as a retirement destination when he came across an article on Leamington.

“We booked a flight, landed on Tuesday, bought a house on Wednesday and flew home on the Friday,” Laurie, 59, recalled. “It was a daunting decision. Leaving all your family and friends at this stage of life. Tearing yourself way from that support system is hard.”

The 100 Mile Club, which is aimed at those 50 and over, has helped them network and make new friends.

“In talking to people we found they’ve come into our area, we’ve sold them on the community and now we want to show them what’s available, “ said Bill Courtney, past president of the Windsor-Essex County Association of Realtors and chair of the committee that organized Friday’s event.

The luncheon served as a kickoff to a series of excursions the club is offering including a county wine tour, the North American Black Historical Museum, Olde Walkerville and Objiway Nature Centre.

Since WEARCI started targeting the over-50 market in 2009, the group has seen 1,042 families relocate and purchase a total of $258 million worth of real estate.

Stephanie Thomson retired to a home on Bob-Lo Island in 2012 after living and working in the Toronto area as a document specialist in a law firm.

She came across the area by chance when she received an email blast from the Canadian Association of Retired Persons.

“It said how would you like to live on an island and I assumed they were talking about Muskoka,” Thomson recalled.

It took the 66-year-old several days before she opened the message. She had never heard of Bob-Lo but was intrigued enough to come see for herself.

“As soon as I turned down Laird Avenue I said ‘I’m going to retire here.’”

When she opted for an unexpected buyout opportunity a short time later, she had “a stiff scotch” to toast her career and set about relocating.

“I have no regrets,” she said. “I love the whole area of Windsor-Essex. I’m so looking forward to what this area is going to morph into. It has so much to offer.”

Five deer meandered through her backyard earlier Friday morning. Bald eagles often soar overhead.

“It’s just been perfect,” she said. “It suits me and it suits my lifestyle.”

Game on at new jail Super Bowl Sunday

Super Bowl XLIX hasn’t even begun, but the game has already gone into overtime for one captive audience.

Staff at Windsor’s Southwest Detention Centre will work late Sunday to allow inmates to watch the NFL championship game.

“The minor cost associated with the extra work is inconsequential compared to the potential benefits of continued positive inmate behaviour,” Brent Ross, spokesman for the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services, said Friday.

Ross said staff will work an additional hour Sunday to allow inmates to watch the game in its entirety. Normally, inmates would be back in their cells without access to televisions.

The game is a reward for good behaviour.

“An important part of inmate rehabilitation is helping them understand the importance of taking responsibility for their actions,” Ross said. “This is one of ways we are working to ensure that we are providing an environment that focuses on rehabilitation and reintegration.”

The Ministry did not comment on how much it will cost in overtime wages, but called the cost “minor.”

Belle River Knights of Columbus hall closing

After 33 years, the Knights of Columbus hall in Emeryville is closing its doors.

“It’s really sad for us,” said Andre Barrette, financial secretary with the Belle River Knights of Columbus Council 2775. “We’ve worked a lot of years and a lot of blood, sweat and tears into this business. It will affect our community, many who use our hall for weddings, meetings and other functions.”

On February 6, the doors of the hall will be closed along with its bar, D2RS. Over the past five years there has been a noticeable decrease in the number of people using the hall at the corner of Renaud Line and County Road 22.

But, Barrette is quick to point out it’s just the business side of the council that is closing. The K of C council will continue to raise money for it’s parish, St. Simon and St. Jude church in Belle River, along with charities in the community. The council will now meet at the parish hall behind the church.

“We’ve really hit a point where it is just not financially feasible for us anymore,” he said. “There are a lot of Saturday nights where we keep it open but there is no one here.”

A few years ago, they decided to renovate the bar side of the hall and even named it D2RS to try to attract a younger crowd. But in the end, nothing seemed to be working.

“In the heyday, this place was always busy with big parties, wedding there was a big need for this hall,” he said. “We tried to give this place a different atmosphere. People are just not going out and drinking as much. This hall is just too big to continue to have if no one is using it.”

Other organizations like the Royal Canadian Legion in various communities have closed their doors. The problem, said Barrette, is people think you have to be a member to pop in for a drink or night out. Not only has the hall taken a hit but the K of C membership is also down.

“A couple years ago, our membership was over 500, now we are only at 350,” Barrette said. “The new generation doesn’t have the time to volunteer. They are busy with their families, they’re kids are in sports. It’s really a different attitude then 20 years ago. They have different priorities.”

There has been an offer to purchase the building so it’s unlikely it will be vacant for long.

“We were always hoping right up to the end that we could make this work,” Barrette said. “We’ve had some great memories here and we’ll continue to have many more. We just won’t be in this building anymore and that’s sad.”

Catholic board selects name for new French Immersion school in Tecumseh

The Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board has announced that its new single-track French Immersion school in Tecumseh will be named St. Andre French Immersion Catholic Elementary School.

The school, which will open in September with junior kindergarten through Grade 1 to start, is named after the first male saint born in Canada.

St. Andre will be housed in what was formerly St. Gregory English-language school. However, St. Gregory was closed last June as part of the board’s consolidation of its elementary schools in Tecumseh.

“The fact that St. Andre was actually born in St. Gregoire, Que., just makes it so fitting for this location,” said WECDSB language consultant Elisa Houston, who suggested the new name.

“He was the porter of Notre Dame College in Montreal for 40 years, so the name also has a great deal of educational relevance.”

Provincial regulations require when a school is closed and reopened it must be renamed.

St. Andre was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI in October 2010.

A formal renaming ceremony will be scheduled at a later date.

Environment Canada issues special weather alert, area could see up to 15 cm of snow

Windsor and Essex County could see its most significant snowfall of the winter on Sunday.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement, alerting the region of a developing winter storm system that could potentially bring between 10 to 15 centimetres of snow to Windsor and Essex County as well as the Chatham-Kent area.

“There remains some uncertainty in the track of this storm,” the statement said. “Snow accumulation could be higher if it tracks further north. In addition, gusty northeast winds would result in local blowing snow and reduce visibilities.”

LaSalle brothers organize charity concert for kids with cancer

Three LaSalle brothers have been putting together a Led Zepplin inspired concert to help children suffering from cancer.

The Villanova high school concert, which takes place this coming Saturday, will feature the local band Fools in the Rain, which will be playing Led Zepplin tunes. Proceeds will go support Windsor Regional Hospital’s paediatric oncology patients.

Parker Drouillard, 16, has been organizing the event with the help of his two brothers: Aiden, 13, and Mathew, 15.

“It’s really nice helping out because I know it does make a big difference in how the kids are treated there,” Parker said.

He usually does Christmas cards as a fundraiser for the kids, getting them to design it and then selling it for the charity. However, he couldn’t this year because there were hospital visitor restrictions at the time because of the risk of the kids catching a respiratory virus.

“Our make-up for that would be the concert,” he said.

Parker first started organizing charity events to help children at Windsor’s hospital when he was 8-years-old. At the time his brother Aiden was in the hospital with pneumonia.

“They didn’t have much toys or anything and from that I said I wanted to do something about it,” Parker said.

After helping secure toys for sick children, he went on to organize several fundraisers, moving from lemonade stands, raking leaves and Chinese lanterns to Christmas cards and now a full-blown concert.

For many years the events went on to support the paediatrics department, but switched it to supporting the oncology paediatric patients after Parker’s grandmother died from cancer.

“We’re not the richest family and they could be using this money for themselves,” said their mother Cindy. “And they give it away because they have good hearts and they want to help people.”

So far they’ve only sold around a fifth of their tickets, but Parker said that if the they fill the around 500 seats at the concert, it will raise about $4,000.

Parker has raised around $30,000 over the years for children at Windsor’s hospital. In 2012 Parker was awarded the Youth In Philanthropy Award by the Association of Fundraising Professional.

Mark Odette was at the event and donated $25,000 on Parker’s behalf to the hospital.

The Cancer Care 4 Kids Concert starts 7 p.m., Feb. 7. Tickets are available at the door for $10 or $8 in advance from the Windsor Regional Hospital, Long & McQuade or Vintage & Vinyl in LaSalle.

You can’t snow-in these Super Bowl fans

Despite bitter winds, stacking snow drifts and hazardous driving conditions, Super Bowl fans plowed through the turmoil to catch the game and root for their team.

While some people opted to stay in and order pizza at home Sunday night, others clambered into SUVs and pickup trucks and voyaged to their preferred football viewing destination to see the Seattle Seahawks square off against the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLIX.

In Seahawk Luke Willson’s hometown of Lasalle, Stars of the Game Sports Grill offered refuge to some who decided to face the elements.

“Super Bowl is a huge day in sports especially with Lasalle’s own Luke Willson playing for the Seahawks in the game,” said Scott D’Amore, co-owner of Stars of the Game. “So that gives everyone here a more vested interest in the ball game.”

D’Amore said the sports bar and restaurant planned for approximately 150 people who had reservations. Through the winter storm, around 120 people still managed to show up. The restaurant’s capacity is 175 patrons.

D’Amore also said he suspected the weather led to the increased volume of take-out orders seen by the kitchen.

“It’s one of those things, you can do all your best planning and then mother nature does her own planning,” D’Amore said. “We’re certainly full but not at capacity as we expected to be at. But it’s still a great crowd out here.”

For 21-year-old Camilo Gonzalez, shovelling snow earlier in the day may have kept him busy but he said his main goal was to watch the championship game and wasn’t about to let snow stop him. He and a friend, Tony Lauer, 21, also made their way to Stars from South Windsor.

“We planned a couple days ago to come here and I have an SUV so we got here just fine,” Gonzalez said.

While Lauer is rooting for the Patriots, Gonzalez is cheering for Luke Willson and the Seahawks.

“In an interview (Willson) said he’s proud to be from around here and he comes home in the summer, so you know it’s definitely good for Windsor and its image,” Gonzalez said.

Across the restaurant an excited group of about half-dozen Patriot fans decked out in jerseys and Patriot tuques yelled at the television. While watching the Super Bowl is a tradition to them, the group was also celebrating Lasalle resident Silvia Bradley’s 54th birthday.

“Family, friends and a winning team” are the fundamental parts of a successful Super Bowl, Silvia said.

The festivities at Stars of the Game etched another Super Bowl in their books but also celebrated 10 years of business at that location. Starting Monday, Stars will be closed for renovations until March.

A shocked Lakeshore woman fled from her car moments before it was destroyed by a train early Monday after she got stuck on a snow-clogged rail crossing.

Essex County OPP said the 49-year-old woman got stuck on the tracks on Renaud Line around 5:45 a.m. She was trying to get her car out of the snow when saw realized a train was coming. It had just left the Windsor Terminal with 43 passengers on board.

The woman hopped out of her car and called 911. As the OPP dispatch centre was trying to contact Via Rail, the train slammed into the woman’s Ford Focus and tore it in half. Police said no one was hurt. There was minor damage to the train.

Police are asking people to avoid the area while Via Rail repairs the signalling devices at the rail crossing. Investigators said they don’t plan on laying any charges.

The massive amount of snow that fell overnight Sunday is also causing problems within Windsor city limits. Windsor police said there were about 30 car crashes in the 24-hour period that ended around 8 a.m. Monday. Police said 10 of those happened between 12 a.m. and 8 a.m. Monday.
