LaSalle council has formally approved its updated bylaw with regard to the control of animals.
The new bylaw passed Tuesday night sees the town restricting the tethering of dogs to four hours a day and also clarifies the number of dogs or cats that can be kept in one residence.
The bylaw sets the limit at three for dogs and four for cats.
Coun. Crystal Meloche had advocated for a special exemption for people boarding rescued animals, but eventually withdrew that request.
The bylaw will be enforced by the Windsor/Essex County Humane Society and executive director Melanie Coulter attended the meeting.
LaSalle is following the lead of Amherstburg, which passed a similar motion Monday night, Windsor and the towns of Essex and Kingsville.
The bylaw also addresses the designation of dangerous dogs and the enforcement of the bylaw regarding them.
The bylaw also prohibits animals from riding in vehicles anywhere other than the enclosed passenger area.
Exceptions are if the animal is in a fully enclosed trailer, in a pickup truck bed with a cap or in a kennel properly attached to the bed of a pickup truck.
The bylaw also states that any animal found in a vehicle left unattended and in imminent physical danger may be removed from the vehicle by a police or bylaw officer and will not be held liable for any damage to the vehicle.
