But don’t tell the staff and students at the school, who believe it’s a symbol that Mary, the mother of Jesus, is looking over the school.
Principal Steve Bellaire said the school was built after the road was already there and named. He said no one gave it a thought until recently when it was pointed out that Mary Street leads right up to the Cross hanging on the front of the school.
“We are looking at it that it’s not just an accident,” he said. “The school was built after the road was named. After it was brought to our attention the whole thing kind of took on a life of its own. We think it’s a sign that Mary is always looking out for the staff and students of Holy Cross.”
Students, staff and families from Holy Cross Catholic School in LaSalle, Ontario form a human chain in celebration of Our Lady of Fatima on May 13, 2016. May 13 is the anniversary of the apparition of Our Lady to three shepherd children in the small village of Fatima in Portugal in 1917. Fr. Michael Parent from Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church led an outdoor mass under sunny skies and warm temperatures. In celebration, the school’s 750 staff and students held a Mary Meets the Cross celebration on Friday. They formed a circular rosary beginning at the front door, onto Mary street and back to the school.
The celebration seemed fitting since the month of May is the Celebration of Mary. Speakers were set up outside to guide the students into proper position, LaSalle police officers helped block off the street and local dignitaries and other special guests attended.
“It was interesting that all of this was right at our front door,” Bellaire said. “It just felt like something we should celebrate.”
