Volunteer spots are quickly filling up for the 2016 FINA World Swimming Championships in Windsor in December.

Communications director Pam Mady estimates close to 600 volunteers are needed to staff the event which runs Dec. 7-11 at the WFCU. The response for volunteers has been good, but a few more people are still needed.

“We are looking for people who love this city, are enthusiastic and really just want to be involved with a world-class event,” Mady said. “It’s one thing to say you attended an event like this but to say you were actually a part of it is really once-in-a-lifetime.”

The volunteers are needed for positions in sport operations, venue operations, protocol, hospitality, communications and transportation. Although the event runs for five days, volunteers are needed for 14 days. Volunteers must be 18 years old and able to commit to a minimum of five shifts. Uniforms will be provided.

“We’ve had people from all over the world who have reached out and want to volunteer,” she said. “Windsor and Essex County residents will be given first priority.”

Anyone interested in volunteering can apply at finawindsor2016.com. The deadline to apply is Sept. 22.

The championships will be welcoming 1,600 athletes from 172 countries. Swimming greats such as Penny Oleksiak and LaSalle’s Kylie Masse will be just a few of the big stars at the Windsor event.
