Ontario farmers could harvest record soybean crop

Farmers are starting to harvest a record Ontario soybean crop.

In the spring, close to three million acres of soybeans were planted which is up from last year’s 2.5 million acres and a record, said Todd Austin, marketing manager with the Grain Farmers of Ontario.

“Yields are very good so all indications look like it will be a record,” Austin said this week.

Soybeans are the largest crop by acreage in Essex County. Clayton Armstrong, a Lakeshore soybean grower, said the harvest is behind schedule but so far the crop looks above average.

Crops were planted late because of a cold, wet spring and the summer was cool and rainy. September brought some sunny weather but there are still concerns that a heavy frost could kill the corn plants and hurt grain corn yields significantly, Austin said. The corn is not ready to be harvested yet.

“Everything’s two, three weeks behind,” Austin said.

Farmers are hoping for good yields because prices for corn and soybeans have dropped.

Expect a lot of farm machinery on the roads in the coming weeks.

Windsor food show looks to connect with Meijer and Kroger

$

The development corporation’s first food show Thursday put local growers and food processors together with buyers from Meijer and Kroger and invited U.S. food processors to take a closer look at investing in Essex County.

“That’s big business,” WindsorEssex Economic Development Corporation CEO Sandra Pupatello said of contacts with major U.S. distributors and food chains. “The beauty is that we have invited our own local companies in because it would take them a long time to get access to that same level within those chains and here in one room we give them access to people that would take them forever to get to.”

About 150 people came to the development corporation’s Agri-Business and Food Showcase at Caesars Windsor.

The more markets and sales our local food processors land, the more they will need to process and expand here, Pupatello said. And the region is pitching itself as an ideal spot for large U.S. food processing companies looking at expanding into the Canadian market.

Pupatello said Essex County has cheaper costs for land, rent and labour and sits between two large food markets: Toronto and the northeastern United States.

“We’ve done outreach to the GTA (Greater Toronto Area) because we think they belong here and we’ve done outreach on the U.S. side because we think they belong here. The Americans need to know there’s a huge market, the GTA, and the best place to do that work is from Windsor,” Pupatello said.

“And we also know that the GTA should be doing more work with America and the best way to do that is from Windsor. So you can see our approach and why strategically we’re in the best spot. Now we just need to tell everybody.”

She told the group of the supply chain that already exists in Essex County and the work local businesses have already done to develop markets as far away as China. “We think Windsor Essex is actually your ticket to the world.”

Ashley Aveiro, a marketing assistant from Mucci Farms in Kingsville, was showing off some of the greenhouse’s tomatoes and peppers. Aveiro said it’s nice to talk to local customers and see what products they are seeking. The greenhouse vegetables from Mucci Farms are already in the major Canadian grocery stores and are regularly sold at Kroger.

“I think it’s pretty good exposure,” she said of Thursday’s event.

After the food show and speeches there were bus tours to Thomas Canning, Highline Mushrooms, Dainty Foods, Red Sun Farms, One Floral Greenhouses and Viewpointe Estate Winery.

Steve Peters, executive director of Food and Beverage Ontario, said the $39-billion food and beverage processing industry in Ontario is the engine of the provincial economy.

Peters said Essex County gets that and he praised the local development corporation for trying to develop new markets.

“The right ingredients are here from the great growing conditions to farmers who know what they’re doing and who have been doing a good job for a long time to the whole agri-processing centre,” Peters said.

New program will help youth start their own businesses

$

Just 89 days after he was hired for a lucrative technical job in Windsor, Kyle Devine was laid off. That’s when he decided it was time to try a different option: starting his own business.

“The first three months of the business, I was just reading,” he said, trying to learn everything he needed to know about the rules, regulations, and management of small start-ups.

That’s where the new mentorship and grant program Starter Company from the Windsor Essex Economic Development Corporation comes in.

It’s designed to make that transition run smoother, providing potential entrepreneurs with training sessions, one-on-one mentors and grants up to $5,000. The program was announced on Friday.

“Sometimes people who might grow up in a small business household, they’ll know what it’s like because their family has a small business. But if you don’t come from that background you won’t even consider that that could be an option in terms of what you’re going to do as a career,” said Sandra Pupatello, CEO of the development corporation. “We’re going to reach out to people and say, you know what, this is an option.”

The program, which is run out of the Small Business Centre, is aimed at youth from 18 to 29 who are out of school.

It will try to combat the high failure rate of start-ups by giving potential entrepreneurs what they need before they get in too deep.

“A lot of times that we see failure in businesses starting up is because there isn’t a good foundation for everything that you need to start a business: a business plan to apply to funding, as well as marketing and advertising, understanding your finances, understanding your cash flow,” said Sandra Vasquez, youth co-ordinator for the project. “That’s exactly what the workshops are meant to do. They’re going to target specific subjects that are important for anyone that is starting their own business.”

For Devine, whose staffing agency Devine Personnel is starting to pick up steam after he first began in January, that support could have made the process much easier.

“Even just to have a mentor in the field show me the ropes and show me where to go,” he said would have been beneficial. He spent several months of his new business just collecting information, developing contacts and seeking expert advice.

Starter Company participants will have to go through the training and mentorship before they can consider applying for one of the 25 grants of up to $5,000. That’s so that the centre can ensure people receiving a share of the relatively small amount of funds will be sure to put them back into the region.

“If we do that right, that’s 25 new companies in our community,” Pupatello said.

Windsor will be the regional centre for the Starter Company programs across Essex County and all the way to London.

“We wanted to have people consider this as a third option. Your choices aren’t just go back for more school or go out and get a job,” Vasquez said. “We want people to do something that they love so they stay in our area and they really contribute to our economy.”

A 20-year-old Leamington man is dead after he was struck by a car along Highway 3 early Sunday morning.

Ontario Provincial Police said the man was walking eastbound in the westbound lanes of Highway 3 near County Road 27 when he was struck by an eastbound vehicle.

Witness John Kairouz was being driven home from work by a friend, heading east towards Leamington when he said he saw a car further up the road swerve, which they thought was to avoid an animal.

They continued down the road until their headlights shone on a man right in front of them, walking in the eastbound lane of the road.

His friend pulled a sharp left, narrowly avoiding the man. “If I had my hand out the window, I would have hit him,” Kairouz said.

Kairouz immediately called the police and while he was on the phone, he said the man was hit by a car behind them around 12:10 a.m.

He and his friend went over to help. He said the car that hit the man was a small black Nissan SUV. The hood was destroyed and the airbag deployed. The driver, a woman, was not visibly injured.

The man was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police are not releasing the name of the victim until next of kin are notified.

Cottam pick-your-own pumpkin patch in its last season

This is the last year for the pumpkin patch, corn maze and wagon rides at  McLeod Farms as the Cottam family ends its decades-old pick-your-own pumpkin business.

“A lot of people are sad,” Helen McLeod said Wednesday.

McLeod Farms will still have pick-your-own strawberries for a few years since they just put in a new strawberry plants.

Pumpkins are the second pick-your-own crop in Essex County that is ending this year in what could be a bad sign for that on the farm experience. Klassen Blueberries announced in September it would not continue its pick-your-own blueberry operation that dates back 35 years so its owners could retire.

The McLeods started with pick-your-own strawberries 34 years ago and the pumpkin patch sometime after that on County Road 34 near Cottam. The McLeods added decorative cornstalks, gourds, squash, school tours and baked goods.

“You just can’t not love a pumpkin, you know. They’re lovable,” Helen said. “That’s what I’m going to miss is standing in the kitchen and looking out the back and all those orange orbs out there. It’s pretty impressive.”

But it’s exhausting, she said. It worked when she was a stay at home mom and their three children were able to help out especially as teenagers. But now they have children of their own.

Helen and her husband Murray, a retired autoworker, are in their late 50s. About a month ago he decided this would be the last fall for the pumpkins.

“The last couple years have been quite a challenge growing the pumpkin crop,” he said.

Pick-your-own pumpkin season can be ruined if the weather is poor on the weekends when people usually come out to the farm. The McLeods have to worry about mud, liability insurance and an early frost. This year the McLeods had to plant pumpkins a couple times to get a crop and do much of the work by hand because equipment couldn’t get in the wet field. Murray starts in early April with the strawberries and the work never seems to stop, he said. The corn maze alone took three weeks of extra work to get ready for the public.

Murray said they have four grandchildren and he doesn’t want to miss things like their baseball games.

He said he’ll miss moments like when families would pose on the hayride for a picture. Generations in families have picked pumpkins at the farm.

The McLeods will welcome the public back for strawberries next year but grow soybeans instead of pumpkins.

The farm at 270 County Road 34 West will be open Saturday, Sunday and Thanksgiving Monday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with trips through the corn maze ending at 4:30 p.m. The farm keeps customers up to date on the pumpkin picking on its McLeod Farms Facebook page.

Two Lakeshore drivers displease OPP

Two Lakeshore motorists earned the rebuke of OPP in bad driving incidents earlier this week.

On Tuesday evening, 25-year-old Brian Lafreniere of Lakeshore was charged after he allegedly drove into oncoming traffic at a Tecumseh intersection.

Police said an officer was stopped at a red light in the northbound lanes of Banwell Road around 6:35 p.m. when he noticed a vehicle pull out behind him to hurry into the left turn lane — entering the southbound lanes in the process.

According to police, two southbound vehicles were forced onto the road’s shoulder in order to avoid a head-on crash with Lafreniere’s vehicle.

No one was hurt.

Lafreniere has been charged with careless driving, failure to surrender an insurance card, having an insecure load, having no mudguards, and driving a vehicle without a valid permit.

In a separate incident on Thursday morning, 44-year-old Shawn Clenighan of Lakeshore was clocked driving an SUV on County Road 27 at a speed of 146 km/h.

The posted speed limit on that section of roadway — just north of Lions Club Road — is 60 km/h. Clenighan’s GMC Envoy was allegedly traveling 86 km/h above that limit.

The amount of excessive speed qualified Clenighan for a stunt driving charge under the Highway Traffic Act — resulting in immediate impounding of his vehicle and a seven-day license suspension.
