Jewelry stealing burglars on the loose in Tecumseh and Lakeshore

Provincial police believe serial jewel thieves are at work in Tecumseh and Lakeshore, doing surveillance on homes and breaking in after victims leave for work in the morning.

The Essex County OPP Street Crimes Unit is investigating a string of residential break and enters which all appear to be connected. The thieves always take jewelry, police said.

Investigators believe one of the burglars is a woman in her 40s. She’s about 5’6” with a medium to heavy build and “reddish brown” shoulder-length hair. She was seen wearing a long trench coat style jacket and spoke with some kind of accent. A witness saw her get into a four-door silver sedan after fleeing from one of the homes.

Police are asking people to call if they have contact with this woman or see her in the Tecumseh or Lakeshore areas. You can call Det. Jeff Paquette of the OPP Street Crimes Unit at 519-723-2496 or Crime Stoppers at 519-258-TIPS.

Pet python on the loose in Lakeshore

The thought of a three-foot python on the loose in Lakeshore may seem scary to some people, but the missing reptile is really the one in danger.

“It does not have good odds at all, especially this time of year,” said Karen Cedar, naturalist at the Ojibway Nature Centre. “Most pythons, in the 80s is a nice comfortable temperature for them. We’re not even close to that. What happens to reptiles when they’re out of their climate comfort zone is they’re more prone to getting sick. So it’s likely if he’s not found quickly he’ll get an infection and die from that, if he doesn’t just outright die from exposure.”

Essex County OPP have issued a press release asking people to keep an eye out for a three-foot pet python that escaped from captivity. Unlike Windsor, Lakeshore does not have a bylaw banning the possession of exotic pets.

Police said the owner was moving his snake around 4:30 p.m. Sunday on 1st Avenue near Broadway Street when it somehow slithered away. Despite an extensive search, he couldn’t track it down.

Police said the snake is not venomous and it is not known to be aggressive toward people. Cedar also said it’s unlikely to be dangerous to anyone.

She said the only creature really at risk is the python, a species of snake found in the warm climates of Africa, Asia and Australia. Snakes are ectothermic, she said, which means their body temperature is determined by their surroundings.

“There’s nothing they can do to warm up,” she said. “We’re endothermic, so our heat comes from inside our bodies. If we make our muscles work harder, we generate heat. Jog on the spot, that warms you up. Reptiles and amphibians don’t have that option. They’re totally dependent on their environment to provide heat for their survival.”

Unlike pythons, Cedar said snakes native to this area go into hibernation to beat the cold.

“They have everything they need to find a spot underground and just let their bodies slowly shut down and then they just sleep for the winter,” she said. “But pythons don’t have that mechanism. That’s not how they’re designed.”

If it’s still alive, Cedar said it will likely look for a warm spot in garages or cars, for example.

“It couldn’t have gone too far because it only had whatever heat it had at that moment in its body to carry it along,” said Cedar. “Looking for it in warm spots would be the way I would go.”

If you see the snake, call the OPP at 1-888-310-1122.

OPP and Amherstburg police probe similar crime sprees involving daylight jewel heists

$

They’re daring and devious, and they appear to be on an expanding crime spree throughout Essex County.

Amherstburg police sent out a warning to residents Monday that they’ve seen a large spike in daytime break and enters. The thieves’ modus operandi — doing neighbourhood surveillance, breaking in during the day and stealing mainly jewelry — is similar to a series of heists Essex County OPP have been investigating.

Police are trying to confirm if the crime sprees are related.

“They basically case the neighbourhood,” said Const. Shawn McCurdy of Amherstburg police. “If somebody was actually watching, they’d probably see the car drive up and down the road, maybe park for a bit. They pretend they’re going to doors with pamphlets.”

Burglars with similar methods have targeted homeowners in Amherstburg, Lakeshore and Tecumseh.

Amherstburg police said the recent spike of burglaries in their jurisdiction seems to be focused on the Pointe West area and around Murray and Gore streets near downtown. McCurdy said police can’t definitively say if they’re all related.

“But based on the geographical areas, we know that some are linked,” he said.

Police said they believe the brazen burglars, likely a group of both men and women, are of eastern European descent. They work during the day.

They drive around the neighbourhoods in a newer model vehicle, scoping areas for houses to break into. They watch for people leaving home or going into the backyard. They also look for open garage doors or front doors.

If no one is home, the door is unlocked or the owner is the backyard, they will break in.

McCurdy said the crooks also carry pamphlets, pretending to hand them out, as a way to get close to homes and see if people are inside without anyone getting suspicious.

Essex County OPP issued a press release last week warning residents about a similar crime spree in Tecumseh and Lakeshore. Provincial police said serial burglars were staking out neighbourhoods and breaking into homes after victims left for the day.

In that string of break-ins, police said, the crooks always took jewelry, as well. The OPP said a witness saw a woman get into a four-door silver sedan after fleeing one of the homes. The woman appeared to be in her 40s and spoke with some kind of accent.

She’s about five-foot-six with a medium to heavy build and “reddish-brown” shoulder-length hair. She was seen wearing a long trench coat-style jacket.

“There’s a possibility that it’s related,” said McCurdy. “It’s definitely something we’re looking into. That’s why we’re just asking everybody to keep an eye out, report any suspicious activity to us.”

Amherstburg police are asking citizens to report any suspicious activity, regardless of how insignificant it may seem. That includes vehicles repeatedly driving up and down the street and vehicles parked on roads for extended periods with someone inside. Police are also asking residents to be on the lookout for people going door to door with pamphlets, and people walking up and down the street or standing in one place for long periods.

Anyone with information can call the Amherstburg Police Service at 519-736-3622 or Crime Stoppers at 519-258-8477.

Food security a United Way success story

$
0
0

The United Way has just kicked off its annual fundraising campaign and with it, is looking at its accomplishments of the last five years. One of its successes is its food security strategy. It spends about $500,000 a year on four initiatives: food banks, food rescue, community gardens and community kitchens. Here’s more on each:

Food banks

In 2010, the United Way spent $40,000 to develop a database to track food bank usage in Windsor and Essex County. “It gives us a snapshot of the people using the food bank, how often they use it and their background,” said Lorraine Goddard, the United Way’s chief executive officer. The information helps the charity develop other programs Goddard said. “The data helps us answer the question, ‘What other supports do we need to support these families.’”

In Windsor and Essex County, the Unemployed Help Centre is what Goddard refers to as the “hub” for food bank donations. It collects most of the food, then redistributes it to 18 other food banks in the area.

Food banks are changing too, from offering only packaged and canned food to more fresh food, dairy and meat.

Food Rescue

Greenhouses can’t sell cucumbers that aren’t perfectly straight or vine tomatoes with fewer than five fruit on a stem. Ditto for peppers that have even the smallest of blemishes. That produce used to go to landfill. Enter the United Way’s food rescue strategy. With a refrigerated truck donated to the Unemployed Help Centre, all that healthy produce is now collected. The United Way has also developed partnerships with traditional farms, fisheries, food processing plants and banquet halls who donate their surplus as part of the food rescue strategy. In the last two years alone, about 2,000 tonnes of perfectly nutritious food has been “rescued” – diverted from waste and used to feed people in need. Other food rescuers are included in the program, Goddard said. Produce too far gone to be put on food bank shelves goes to Gleaner organizations that dehydrate it for use later.

Community Kitchens

There are 12 community kitchens across Windsor and Essex County – at least one in each municipality – where people can go to learn to cook nutritious meals. Often the recipes use vegetables on offer at local food banks. “What’s the point in giving someone zucchini if they don’t know what to do with it?” said Goddard. These community kitchens also use produce from the food rescue program, she said. “If we get a glut of tomatoes, they make pasta sauce or tomato soup.”

Community Gardens

In 2010, there were exactly three communal gardens where residents could go and grow their own food. Seeing it as a chance to build neighbourhoods as well as increase food security, the United Way now funds 25 such gardens throughout Windsor and Essex County. Apartment dwellers now have a patch of land to grow their own veggies. Hobby gardeners can take the food home, or donate it to the food banks and community kitchens.

Back to the future for pioneer museum curator

Janet Cobban has been living in the 1850s for much of her adult life.

But this month Essex County’s premier pioneer woman is hanging up her bonnet, long dress and red flannel petticoat as she retires after 27 years as the curator of the John R. Park Homestead.

“I’m going to time travel. I thought I’d live in the 21st century for a while,” Cobban joked this week.

Thousands of school children would know the costumed Cobban as the one making them cookies at the kitchen fireplace or showing how pioneers made candles or maple syrup. Many kids probably thought she did live in the house built in 1842 for John and Amelia Park.

Janet Cobban, shown here in 1991, the curator of the John R. Park Homestead for the last 27 years, is retiring this month. She is shown at the Harrow, ON. location on Wed. Nov. 5, 2014. (Windsor Star files)

“I’m in a grocery store and somebody comes up to me who’s obviously only ever seen me in costume at the homestead and said ‘I didn’t know you had hair.’”

Inevitably the odd time she did leave on her pioneer garb to go home, she would have to stop for gas or her car would break down.

“There you are standing on the side of the road waiting for CAA and you’re wearing a long dress and this bonnet,” she said. “You kind of have to do a little explaining to the tow truck driver.”

A 19th century lady wouldn’t give her age so neither will Cobban who is retiring on a high note.

She recently received a distinguished career award from the Ontario Museum Association’s 2014 Awards of Excellence. Cobban, who also doubled as curator of Windsor’s Community Museum for eight years, said it’s an award for everybody in this area since she’s had support from hundreds of people involved in local history.

Kris Ives, who will be promoted to homestead curator, said Cobban raised the profile of the Essex Region Conservation Authority’s museum on County Road 50 southeast of Harrow. In 2010 the Ontario Historical Society recognized the homestead as the province’s best living history museum.

Cobban has never lived in a house of her own as long as she’s worked at the homestead and when she was alone in the house by Lake Erie in the morning it felt like she lived there. She knows the Park family, which had a shipping line, a general store and a sawmill, mostly through their letters and feels connected to them.

“I hang out with dead people all the time,” Cobban said. “I’m not talking about ghosts. I just mean that the things that they made or the things that they built or the decisions that they made that shaped the way things are now, those things are still here.”

And they tell their story, a part of our rich local history. Sometimes visitors don’t see it as real, a slice of mid-19th century life from an actual family. In our virtual world where people occasionally look up from their iPhones, museums and conservation areas are becoming more meaningful, Cobban said. There’s power in real experiences.

“Kids say ‘Is that a real fire? Is that a real squirrel?’”

Cobban, who grew up in Mount Brydges and earned a history degree, thinks she would’ve made a good pioneer. She boasts she’s never set herself on fire although she’s melted a few holes in her period clothing. Full disclosure: she uses matches and not the authentic flint and steel but wet wood or wind still make starting a fire a challenge.

“On the other end you have to make a fire and not burn the things down. I have exploded the tallow pot,” she said of the animal fat used to make candles.

No one was injured. Those woolen pioneer outfits are good protection against sparks, she said, and warm when you are outside. She gets asked a lot if her pioneer fashions are hot but those big skirts do allow air to circulate underneath in the summer.

What might she miss as she steps back to the future?

The lake views: “I think I have the best office in Essex County. My office windows are 10 feet away from the shore of Lake Erie.”

Alleged drunk driver’s injuries lead to investigation of Essex County OPP

The province’s police watchdog is investigating Essex County OPP after a suspected drunk driver was injured early Wednesday when he allegedly crashed a car and resisted arrest.

“Our preliminary information is that the officers were responding to a single-vehicle collision,” said Jasbir Brar, spokeswoman for the Special Investigations Unit (SIU). “They attempted to arrest a 57-year-old man. There was an interaction during that process of arrest and the man was taken to Hotel-Dieu hospital.”

Essex County OPP responded to a crash at 3:18 a.m. Wednesday on County Road 46 west of Sexton Side Road in Tecumseh. Police said a 57-year-old man from Woodslee ran his vehicle off the road and struck a culvert.

When an officer tried to arrest the man for drunk driving, he resisted and had to be restrained, police said.

Brar said the man was treated for one serious but non-life threatening injury at the Windsor Regional Hospital’s Ouellette campus. She wouldn’t elaborate on the nature of the injury.

The OPP notified the SIU, which has invoked its mandate to investigate. The SIU is a civilian arm’s length agency that investigates incidents involving police that result in serious injury, death or sexual assault.

Brar said the SIU has three investigators and one forensics investigator looking into the incident. Part of the investigation will involve determining if the man’s injury came from the car crash or the subsequent arrest, she said.

The OPP said they are conducting a parallel investigation into the car crash.

The crime happened on the afternoon of Nov. 2. The complainant said he was driving his truck on North River Road in Lakeshore around 2:30 p.m. when he ran out of gas.

After parking the vehicle on the side of the road, the driver called a friend to pick him up so that he could obtain fuel.

When the man returned to the truck about 25 minutes later, his tools were missing.

Police said the stolen items include chainsaws and power tools. The equipment is marked or engraved with the words: “Angry Beaver.”

MPP calls on Health Minister to save Leamington’s obstetrics unit

$

The Health Ministry is putting mothers and families at risk by not providing the money Leamington District Memorial Hospital needs to continue delivering babies, MPP Rick Nicholls said in the Ontario legislature Thursday.

Leamington is still reeling from the job losses that have resulted with news that Heinz was leaving town, Nichols (PC — Chatham-Kent-Essex) said during Question Period. He said the announced closure of the obstetrics unit will result in the “firing” of 40 staff, including registered nurses.

“This places Leamington’s economic recovery in jeopardy, but more importantly, it puts the health of local residents in jeopardy,” Nicholls said, charging that women in labour will be forced to drive to Windsor Regional Hospital’s obstetrics department.

“With millions of dollars spent on middle management in health care, why is there no room for Leamington’s vital clinic?” he asked.

Health Minister Dr. Eric Hoskins responded that he understands  half of the Leamington women giving birth already go to Windsor to deliver and that the plan that’s being recommended by the LDMH board involves a realignment of services intended to better meet the needs of the community. The plan, which proposes adding more beds to other departments such as complex continuing care and medical-surgical, is  going to the Erie St. Clair LHIN for a final decision. The LHIN is holding a public meeting on Wednesday at 5 p.m.  at the Roma Club of Leamington.

Speaking outside the legislature, Hoskins told reporters the public still has the opportunity to influence the LHIN decision.

“It’s really important that the Local Health Integration Network hear from the local community,” the minister said. “They’ve set aside a significant amount of time to hear from the local community to get their views on that.”

The obstetrics department, which has been operating since 1956 and delivers 300 babies a year, is slated to close March 31.

More than 2,500 have signed petitions asking that obstetrics stay in Leamington. Municipal councils are coming on board with resolutions. And Leamington Mayor John Paterson has written a letter to Premier Kathleen Wynne, asking for her intervention.

“Hundreds of signatures have already been collected in support of the LDMH obstetrics clinic,” Nichols said in a news release. “It’s clear how important the clinic is to the community. We have to fight for it.”
