The Windsor police major crimes branch is continuing to investigate human remains that were located in a woodlot in the Amherstburg area.
The remains were found by Windsor police officers on Monday around 4 p.m. in a forested area off Concession Road 8, midway between Alma Street and Texas Road.
Although the area is technically in the jurisdiction of Amherstburg police, the remains were not discovered by happenstance: They were sought out as part of an active investigation by the Windsor police major crimes branch.
“That investigation brought (Windsor police officers) to Amherstburg,” said Windsor police spokesman Sgt. Steve Betteridge. “It is an ongoing investigation in which we are the lead.”
Betteridge noted that it’s not unusual for investigations to take Windsor police into other jurisdictions.
Windsor police forensics officers examined and processed the scene on Monday, and a coroner confirmed that the remains are human.
Betteridge said the next goal of the investigation is identification of the remains.
A police presence that included OPP officers remained in the area throughout Tuesday.
Investigative efforts were concentrated on a woodlot on the eastern side of Concession Road 8, south of McGregor and west of the McClean Drain.
The Windsor Police Service’s mobile command unit could be seen stationed off the main road, further into the woodlot.
